2018 CrossFit 563 Open

Feb. 22nd – Mar. 26th

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!  The CrossFit Games Open kicks off Thursday, February 22nd!

What is the CrossFit Games Open?

Every year the CrossFit Games Season begins with the CrossFit Games Open.  Over 5 weeks, one workout is released each week on Thursday at 7 p.m., and athletes have four days or 96 hours to complete the workout and submit their score. Scores are due before 7 p.m. that Monday.

2018 CrossFit Games Open Schedule

February 22nd to March 26th

Week 1 (18.1): Feb. 22 – 26

Week 2 (18.2): Mar. 1 – 5

Week 3 (18.3): Mar. 8 – 12

Week 4 (18.4): Mar. 15 – 19

Week 5 (18.5): Mar 22 – 26

More than 272,000 people from around the globe competed in the Open last year. As the largest CrossFit community event of the season, the Open ties together athletes from within the same gym to those in their broader city, country and world.

For five weeks, you—and the hundreds of thousands of other people who signed up—are at the whim of the Director of the Games, Dave Castro. Taking on workouts that may push you to learn a new skill, improve the skills you already have, or go into a darker place than you’ve ever been before.

The Open welcomes anyone 14 to 100 years old. All you need to do is sign-up, and enter a score each week. To make the Open even more accessible, a scaled option was introduced in 2015. Each time a workout is released, athletes will be given two versions: Rx’d and Scaled. The Scaled-workout option is designed to be accessible to the majority of people who attend CrossFit affiliates. If you do CrossFit, there’s a very high chance you can do the Open, too.

Why should I participate in the 2018 CrossFit 563 Open?

This year we want to make the Open extra special!  This will be by far the largest community event at our gym throughout the year and hope to have maximum participation from all of you!  We will follow the CrossFit Games Open workout standards each week for the RX, Scaled, Teens, & Masters divisions, but can modify as needed for each athlete who is not participating in the actual CrossFit Open.  For us, the Open is more about community and camaraderie as opposed to making it a “who’s better than who” competition.

Below you can see our weekly schedule during this Open season and some additional details to how it will all go down.

2018 CrossFit 563 Open Weekly Schedule

Thursdays at 7PM – “Fight Night”

CrossFit HQ’s Live Open Announcements begin at 7PM every Thursday.  We’ll join together at the gym to watch these announcements and two brave souls will tackle the just announced CrossFit Games Open workout head to head!  We have some in mind for this, but if you’d like to challenge someone to “Fight Night”, let us know!!

Fridays at 5PM – “Friday Night Lights”

The weekly main event of the 2018 CrossFit 563 Open!  CrossFit 563 members that are registered for the 563 Open will report to CrossFit 563 to perform the CrossFit Games Open workout announced the evening before.  Each athlete will be assigned a heat, and have an assigned judge to ensure adherence to the movement standards published by CrossFit HQ.

The workout brief will begin at 5:00 PM and the first heat of athletes will begin between 5:15 & 5:30, depending on the workout.  If you can not make it at exactly 5:00 pm, no worries.  You can sign-up for a heat ahead of time and jump in when you get there, warmed up, and ready.  Spectators encouraged!  Bring a chair, your own drink (adult beverages acceptable), and help push these guys and gals through the finish line.

“Friday Night Lights” is scheduled from 5:00PM to 8:00PM but please be aware, because of the *UNKNOWN* variable of these workouts, there may be some nights that the competition goes on longer than expected; please be flexible.  If needed, we may start earlier than 5:00PM as well.

Saturday (7-8AM) & Sunday (2-3PM) Open Gyms

Ideally you make it in on Friday night but if you cannot, you’ll have the opportunity to have your Open workout judged during either Open Gym times Saturday and Sunday.  If this does not work, it will be your responsibility to set up a time to be judged by a coach outside of regular class times.

New this year!

Each week we will design a partner workout similar the Open workout, that can be substituted in during Friday Night Lights, Saturday, or Sunday sessions. Whether you’re nervous about tackling them alone or just prefer partner workouts, this will be an option each week.

*PS, both still need to register separately*

I’m in!  How do I sign up?!

Registration Details:

There are three ways to participate in this years Open

  1. Register for just the 2017 CrossFit 563 Open –  Registration costs ($30/athlete, paid to CrossFit 563) will help cover costs of tshirts, supplies, judges, prizes, and awards. You’ll get a sick event t-shirt, one raffle entry per week (additional raffle entries available as well), and all the goodness that comes with this years 563 Open.
  2. Register for just the CrossFit Games Open – Pay $20 to CrossFit online to compete worldwide with the entire CrossFit community.  No t-shirt, no raffle prize entries, and you will need to either videotape your Open workouts or complete them under the supervision of a qualified judge, during a time which does not interfere with our regular classes.  Again, this time must be outside our regular class times, and it will be your responsibility to make your arrangements with a Coach and pay them for their time.
  3. Register for both. If you decide to register for both, you’ll get $10 off your 563 Open fee. In order to avoid having multiple sign-ups & any confusion, please go ahead and register for both (the CrossFit Games Open & the 563 Open) and after week one we will print a list of athletes registered for both and add $10 store credit to your Wodify account to use in the future.

563 Open Registration will be live on Sunday, January 21st at the link below, and although the actual deadline is Friday February 23rd, in order confirm your event t-shirt, please register by February 7th.

F.A.Q.

Do I need to sign-up for the CrossFit Games Open in order to participate in the CrossFit 563 Open?

  • Nope!  The CrossFit 563 Open is open to all 563 members without registration into the CrossFit Games Open.  However, if you do want to participate in the CrossFit Games Open, you are highly encouraged to sign-up for the CrossFit 563 Open!

What if I want to do the CrossFit Games Open, but do not want to participate in the 563 Open?

  • You are welcome to register for only the CrossFit Games Open if you’d like, but to put that into perspective.  This would be the equivalent to running alongside a 5k, but not actually paying for the race itself.  Not cool bro!  Plus you don’t get the sweet t-shirt at the end!

I’m not able to make it every Friday for Friday Night Lights, can I still participate?

  • Of course!  If you cannot make it Friday nights, you have the opportunity to be judged during either Open Gym times over the weekend, Saturdays between 7-8AM & Sunday 2-3PM.

Can I do the Open during regular class times?

  • No.  If you cannot complete the Open WOD during Friday Night Lights or either Open Gym time over the weekend, you will need to complete your Open workout under the supervision of a qualified judge, during a time which does not interfere with our regular classes.  Again, this time must be outside our regular class times, and it will be your responsibility to make your arrangements with a Coach and pay them for their time.

Who does the registration fees benefit?  CrossFit Headquarters or CrossFit 563?

  • The registration fee for the CrossFit Open benefits only CrossFit Headquarters.  You have the opportunity to see your scores in comparison to all those who register in your division worldwide.  The registration fee for the CrossFit 563 Open is strictly to cover the cost of putting on this event, event t-shirts, staffing, prizes, any other costs incidental to the event, and one hell of an after party!

I’d like to help out but I’m not into extra fitness aside from my regular classes.  What can I do?

  • We are in need of judges, floor set-up, athlete controllers, etc.  Chat with Coach Jake if you’re interested!

If you have any further questions regarding the CrossFit 563 Open, please do not hesitate to ask!

Again 563 Open Registration will be live on Sunday, January 21st at the link below, and although the actual deadline is Friday February 23rd, in order confirm your event t-shirt, please register by February 7th.
